DTect-IT Bar Feeder Vibration Detection Reduces Scrap and Increases Tool Life

See how Wolfram Manufacturing is using the DTect-IT CNC Sensor Analysis System to detect excess bar feeder vibration as a result of bent or out of round bar stock.

Imperfections in bar stock can lead to a lot of scrap very quickly. Using Caron Engineering’s DTect-IT CNC Sensor Analysis System with a vibration sensor attached to the main spindle we can monitor for vibration as a result of bar stock issues. DTect-IT can signal the CNC to reduce spindle RPM until the vibration level is acceptable to make good parts, or stop the CNC if vibration is too excessive.

Hey everybody I’m Andrew with Wolfram Manufacturing. Right here we have our Tsugami S206 with DTect-IT from Caron Engineering. We have a vibration sensor installed on the main spindle of this machine, and what we’re trying to achieve is monitoring for vibration on the main spindle for any excess vibration that’s a result of bent bar stock or out of round bar stock in our bar feeder. So we’re checking for vibration before we cut, because all vibration that’s happening at the back of the bar feeder manifests at the front of the main spindle, which if material is vibrating there it’s vibrating where our cutting tool is making contact with the material. So what DTect-IT is going to do is look at the vibration signal, and, if it exceeds a certain value, it’s going to lower the machine’s spindle speed until we reach an acceptable amount of vibration, and then the program is going to proceed into machining the part with reduced vibration. Alright, we’re going to go ahead and start our part program, and what you’re going to see is once the spindle starts spinning our vibration sensor is going to detect the vibration in the main spindle as the spindle speed has decreased our vibration is going to decrease. So I’m going to go ahead and start the machine, we see the spindle start and when we see our vibration signal every little spike is the spindle turning down in spindle speed, so we’re reducing vibration every 50 rpm until we fall below our warning limit. So right there we fell below our warning limit, and now we’re going to proceed with our part program.  DTect-IT is automatically reducing the spindle speed of the machine to reduce vibration so that we can increase tool life, have a better surface finish, all of which are problems that we see as a result of bar feeder vibration.
